Summary
"March 2014 saw the start of Tauranga Hospital's centenary year. The redevelopment of the Cameron Road site had been the outcome of many years of work and negotiations between successive Bay of Plenty District Health Boards and various government ministers and ministry representatives. The 2014 opening of the completely rebuilt Whakatane Hospital was a reminder of all that had come before for the Bay of Plenty District Health Board. Tauranga Hospital had been in a building phase for redevelopment from 2004 with dramatic changes to the site, from the building of new wings to the demolition of older buildings. As the population of Tauranga doubled and then trebled and became a more ageing one, the board had to take changing demands for service into account when developing and equipping the two sites. Private and public partnerships and advances in technology allowed the board to provide services that they had previously been unable to deliver for their patients ... Over the past 100 years, there have been dramatic changes in the provision of hospital and health services in the Bay of Plenty, from the rudimentary first cottage hospital to the finest service this country has to offer. As this book explains, public pressures exerted upon the hospital buildings, the professional and allied staff in those buildings, and the ongoing demand for the technological advances in communication and medicine have brought about these changes." -- Foreword (page iii)

Note
  • "In 1990, Dr Rex E. Wright-St Clair prepared a manuscript entitled "Seven decades of hospital care, Tauranga Hospital Board, 1918-1989". A copy of this manuscript was presented to the (then) Tauranga Hospital Board and is in the hospital library but was never published. I have relied extensively on this manuscript for information relating to the people and places over that period of the Tauranga Hospital's history but added to it where I believed further elaboration or minor correction was required. The last 25 years, from 1989-2014, are all my own efforts but I take full responsiblility for the content of the entire book. Dr. Wright-St Clair passed away on 17 February 2005 but much of his work endures in this book. Therefore it is appropriate he be recognised as the co-author of this publication ..." -- Preface (page v)
